Ah, yes. That's just a matter of your registrar being stupid.
The nameservers for the domain need to DNS entries in the root server as
well, so that's where the hostname requirement comes in. However, the
registrar should also allow you to create new entries.
(for example, I have ns1.shaftnet.org and ns2.shaftner.org registered
that way)
