[ale] Image pattern recognition

I'm looking for some software(?) that does image pattern recognition.
Specifically, I would like to provide a seed image file (i.e. a picture
of a symbol) and have the software search a directory of other images
and return a list of images that contain that symbol.

Any idea on where to start?
