I did this the opposite direction, shutting off my splash screen on my laptop 
so I could see the debug. 

You need to install a splash theme, then you can use something like 
splash -n /etc/bootsplash/themes/linux/bootsplash-1024x768.cfg

I think that's what I used, something similar at least.
