[ale] CD or not CD

I am able to dupe audio cds even burn photo cds, but I cannot burn data 
cds. I have a dual-boot with the infamous Linspire and Ubuntu on this 
box. I mostly work with Ubuntu, which uses Gnome for its desktop. What 
is missing? I am not sure how to do it using the CLI (commands and the 
sequence of), and using the File Manager, it will ask for a blank cd 
even though there is one in the drive.
