[ale] computer hangs at boot: Checking NVRAM

When I boot my computer it hangs for about 5 minutes during the POST test
displaying "Checking NVRAM". I've got an ATI bios, Tyan S2885 motherboard
with dual opterons. It started doing this within the last week.

If I leave it long enough it seems to boot okay, but I'd like to get past it
a little quicker.

Any suggestions are welcome.
