[ale] Printer problems

While trying to print a document yesterday, I discovered that the
printer had vanished from the menu.

Went to system settings..../Printers ... I received an error message
Unable to retrieve printer list. Error received from the manager:
Connection to the cups server failed. Check that the cups server is
correctly installed and running.


The cups server had actually stopped running.When I try starting cupsys
from the services menu, a blank window pops up.

I have Ubuntu edgy running.

Any idea why this is happening and what could be the solution
