[ale] requirements for dd to mirror another hard drive ?

I'm in the process of reinstalling an OS and when finished and while it's still virginal, I'd like to make a pristine copy using dd.

What is required so that when finished I can simply plug it in and boot 'er up.

Is there a better tool or technique for this ?
