Alan,
It looks like your system has been configured to use ldap to get user
information. As root, in a terminal shell, you need to run
system-config-authentication. If you run this under X, you should make
sure that the 4 options under the user tab, ( enable nis, enable ldap,
enable hesiod, enable winbind), are all unchecked. You should also make
sure those 4 are unchecked under the authentication tab. Under the
authentication tab you should check "Use Shadow Passwords" and "Use MD5
Passwords." That should allow you to log in as the users that you created
on your local workstation.
