Thanks for the suggestions. Here's how it played out:
1. I started 'novell-zmd' from a 'root' login using the 'init.d' startup
script.
2. I logged in and found the update widget running in the task bar. I
selected it to 'Configure' (rt. click).
3. I de-selected the 'Run ... on login' setting.
Voila - no more nag screens.
