It's always worked for my (admittedly simple) uses. I was disappointed
that setting up a USB headset on Ubuntu 8.04 via pulseaudio wasn't any
easier than configuring the same hardware in Zenwalk (a slackware
derivative) via ALSA. Neither via the gui tools or config files could I
figure out how to express "send sound to the usb headset when it's
connected, otherwise send sound out via the sound card." I think I ended
up setting the default sink to a virtual device encompassing all sound
devices connected to the system.
