The reason I say this is because there were changes in X video detection 
between
7.10 and 8.04.

If 7.10 works then simply copy /etc/X11/xorg.conf and then blow it all 
away with 8.10.
when 8.10 is done copy the xorg.conf back and you should be in great shape!

7.10 is "old" but it will only be on there for 30 minutes.
