It is entirely possible something busted in the kernel. I recently came
across a drive that works perfectly fine in Linux 2.6.24, but on newer
kernels does not. I haven't had a chance to figure out the usbmon thing
to reply to the bug report's request for information[0], but this isn't
the first time that I've run into USB mass storage issues with certain
types of devices.
