Okay, I just tested this:

Using 2.6.22 on Suse 10.3 machine.

I made a copy of linux source tree (cp --archive /usr/src/linux-2.6.22.19-0.2 .)

Then I immediately did a timed delete:

time rm -rf linux-2.6.22.19-0.2

Ext3:  1.1 seconds
XFS: 1 min 6.9 seconds

You may want to double check your working assumptions.
