[ale] Another nvidia question

Seeing the stuff about the nvidia on-board ethernet reminded me about
my problem today

I dutifully updated my kernel as the update noted, and the new kernel
balked at the nvidia driver from the previous build.

Is there a way to have xorg.conf "rollover" to something like vesa if
the nvidia drivers don't work with the kernel?
