[ale] Remix questions

We have a Dell Inspiron netbook with Ubuntu 9.04, no wait, maybe still 8.*.
I can't remember.
Anyway, it works fine.  So:
1.  Is there any reason why I should upgrade to the latest?
2.  Is there any risk in upgrading?  Is it possible that what's working now
will stop working?
3.  I thought to install Remix on another partition, to be on the safe side,
but:
The computer has no CD drive.  How do I install it if I don't have an
external USB CD drive (and don't have any network install depot)?
