[ale] MP3 player busted?

I've got a "Chinese MP3 player" off eBay last year and it seemed to work
fine.  I'm having an interesting problem now but I'm not sure if it is
Linux related or MP3 player related.

I can copy a mp3 to it.  I can then play that mp3.  I can play mp3s from
it but if I umount it and remount it the mp3 that I just copied is
corrupted.  

$ mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt
$ cp /tmp/music.mp3 /mnt
$ sync
$ mplayer /mnt/music.mp3 # This works
$ umount /mnt
$ mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt
$ mplayer /mnt/music.mp3 # Fails it is corrupt
