If this is a retail Windows, I would echo JD's suggestion that this be
moved into a VM.
Install $ANY_DISTRO on the host, and set it up to start an X11 session
directly from boot, which itself then starts up a VM running the Windows
XP system. Use KVM and set it up to very explicitly hand the virtual
machine an exact set of hardware---this will ensure that Windows thinks
it's the same system every time it boots, regardless of what hardware it
is really running on.
Use LVM, and perhaps keep 3 snapshots---initial setup, and two rolling
monthly snapshots---and that way the system is supportable. Plus you
can securely support it remotely!
