I do this all-the-time for FF and Thunderbird. Only platform specific plugins
fail, but everything else works .... Linux, MS, OSX ... it just works. In fact,
if you do it with a running session, take the files to a new computer and
restart, you'll be offered to restore those sessions - 90% will pick up and
continue where you left off.
When it comes to HOME directories settings, it is more likely to work than not.
That's the genius and simplicity of UNIX-like setups over MS.
For mature programs like firefox, I never worry about going forward with old
settings. Going backwards might not work as desired if the meaning of a setting
changed, but new settings will just be ignored.
