Another cheap option to consider is Pageplus. Their "standard plan" is 
$80/year. You get Verizon coverage (!), and it works with any Verizon 3G 
phone.  I pay 4 cents per minute, 5 cents per text, and 10 cents per MB 
of data (which I only use in emergencies).
