> I believe that unstoppable force is called the want of money.
However, the pressure from the community was overwhelming to open up the
process again, and continued unabated from a time even before the 2000
round was closed. Whatever criticisms you can lay at the feet of ICANN,
especially in recent years, "greed for new TLDs" is not one of them.
Disclaimer, I followed the ICANN process closely from the beginning, and
was a founding member of the SSAC from 2001 until I joined the staff in
2003. I left the ICANN staff in 2005, but remain deeply interested in
what it does, and how it does it.

Ok, I'll take some of that back as I have not followed it as closely as
I should to make a statement like that. And I'm not looking to troll
because I'm as tired of that as anyone here. I need to find out what
community it was you speak of that produced the overwhelming pressure.
Why I said it:
http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/applicants/agb/guidebook-full-04jun12-en.pdf
The gTLD evaluation fee is required from all applicants. This fee is in
the amount of USD 185,000"
"The fee for a three-member RSTEP review team is anticipated to be USD
50,000."
"adjudication fees for a proceeding involving a fixed amount could range
from USD 2,000 to USD 8,000 (or more) per proceeding. ICANN further
estimates that an hourly rate based proceeding with a one-member panel
could range from USD 32,000 to USD 56,000 (or more) and with a three-member
panel it could range from USD 70,000 to USD 122,000 (or more)."
etc.
Seems a lot to someone like me. Hopefully my explanation won't light
flame throwers. I just want to explain my statement.
