AdvFS

(This is a geek rant about my new favorite filesystem
in the whole wide world, DEC's AdvFS. If you don't know
what I'm talking about, skip this now.)

Wow.

AdvFS is such wonderful filesystem.
Not only is it fast, but it also has really kick-ass tools.

Out of space in a file domain? No problem. Throw another
disk in, fire up disklabel, add an advfs partition, and
then 'addvol /dev/rz?? file_domain_name'. Voila- you've just
grown the filesystem to a new disk. No downtime, it only
takes a second, and works like a charm. Want to evenly
distribute files between the disks in a file domain? 
No problem- just run 'balance file_domain_name' and it
automatically does it for you. No downtime. Hate it when
you have to wait for the filesystem to finish an fsck
at boot? NO PROBLEM! AdvFS doesn't NEED to fsck
itself on boot. Did you set up your partitions incorrectly?
Well, with AdvFS you can make one big filedomain and then
grow and shrink filesets as you need to. You can move disks
between file domains if you have too much space in one
and not enough in another. Quick and easy! No downtime!
File fragmentation? The AdvFS defragmenter is.. let's
say it all together.. QUICK AND EASY! And get this-
you can defragment a filesystem WHILE IT'S MOUNTED
AND IN USE!

Have a large file? AdvFS can take it- up to 16 Terabytes
in a file! Want to make filesystem changes but don't want
to take the system down or unmount the filesystem? YOU
DON'T HAVE TO! Delete a file? Go to the trashcan directory
and GET IT BACK! Are you one of those wussies that doesn't
like to type and thinks UNIX is hard to use? THERE'S A
GUI INTERFACE TO SETUP AND TUNE THE FILESYSTEM!

On RAID or JBOD, the only filesystem for me is AdvFS.

No UFS for me anymore- I'm an AdvFS believer!

AdvFS rocks my world.
