[ale] Ctrl-Alt-F7 doesn't work

I've just had an upgrade in my BIOS (involuntary) on my Dell I7k. 
Ctrl-Alt-F7 no longer takes me back to the first GUI display (the screen
does kind of flash).  I've no idea which piece of software is really
responsible for this.
Suggestion welcome.
