[ale] Compiling kernel-2.4.0 on Redhat

I'm curious, has anyone been able to compile the released version of
linux-2.4.0 with RedHat's gcc-1.1.2-40+, gcc-c++-2.96-54, and
gcc-2.96-54?
I have been able to compile knernel-2.4.0 with kgcc-1.1.2-40 only after
changing the Makefile (one line only).
I'm sure the gcc/kgcc discussion has been ground into the dirt based on
decisions at RedHat, but what is the status of gcc after RedHat released
kgcc? Is there a gcc release planned which includes changes by RedHat?
