Hmm, not much help here, sorry.  It is similar to my situation, although 
my drive was a Philips drive.  Stopped me from purchasing another 
Philips drive though.

If you happen to get anymore insight I'd be interested in hearing from 
you.  Do you have the opportunity to test it under a different OS?

I didn't have to buy my radio from a specific company to listen
to FM, why doesn't that apply to the Internet (anymore...)?
