I'm pretty sure it is because I have both 3ware (scsi to linux) and
the add-on adaptec ide controller in the same box that I am having
problems.
To be honest, this incompatibility between add-in cards, USB, 3ware,
SATA is one of my biggest complaints about Linux right now.
I may be unique, but I do a lot of physical disk backups (dd
if=/dev/hdc ...). (Mostly making forensic images of disks and backing
up those images to tape.).
We physically move drives around a lot to do this. (ie. We have 2
other machines we use to make forensic images in the first place.
These production machines are not networked due to security /
reliability / repeatability issues, we just physically move a drive
into our tape server and tar it to tape when we make a backup.)
GRUB / Linux just don't seem very happy with mix and match setups I
need. Maybe I need to investigate LILO again?
