will show exactly what compiler was used for your current kernel.

On my RedHat 9 box it results in:

Linux version 2.4.20-28.9 (bhcompile at porky.devel.redhat.com) (gcc
version 3.2.2 20030222 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.2-5)) #1 Thu Dec 18 13:45:22
EST 2003

Showing it was compiled with gcc version 3.2.2
