[ale] if 'dpkg' is removed, will this entirely disable all up-dating/grading & apt-getfunctions?

Sorry for the incoherence. It was about midnight.....

Anyway, what I now better understand is: what I'm missing with the new
kernel
is a driver for my ethernet card, de620.o, which of course was not part of
the
new kernel. So, I was thinking that if I could compile the source, I would
compile
in said functionality. But it then occurred to me that I don't know how to
"relate"
a new kernel to the old kernel-image functionality. I guess, basically I'd
just
forget the former image and just link the newly compiled kernel to a boot
capability.
But the better and much simpler answer would be to just get a
kernel-2.6.x compatible de620 module.

How ?

Once this is done, I think I'll be all set but 'til then I can't get on the
internet with this
machine.
